Deaf Gatherings

Socialization in the deaf community comes in multiple forms. For example, meeting at a restaurant. The meetings are known as "ASL dinner," "signing supper," or "silent supper." Another popular social meeting is the "deaf coffee," which is a gathering at a coffee shop to chat.

More Than Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is associated with not only mental health conditions but also with numerous physical health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, anaemia, chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep apnea, balance problems and an increased risk of falls.

How do hearing aids work?

Basically, you are putting a microphone-speaker combination right in your ear. The sounds that a healthy ear would pick up are received by the microphone. When you are suffering from hearing loss, there are fewer hair cells within your inner ear that are detecting sound vibrations, and therefore, you cannot hear as well; but with a hearing aid, the vibrations are made so much louder that those few remaining cells can pick up the sound well enough to interpret it. This debunks the common misconception that anyone can use standard hearing aids. If you are completely deaf, there are no more cells to pick up the sound, so even if the vibrations are magnified, nothing can be heard.

Should the deaf be cured?

It is possible for a completely deaf person to be able to hear, with the use of cochlear implants. However, the use of them, especially with deaf infants, is rather controversial. Many believe that it places emphasis on hearing people (us) being “superior” to those in the deaf community (this includes deaf and hard-of-hearing people).

Signing Tip

One word to certainly avoid in the deaf community is “nevermind.” Saying nevermind to a person is essentially dismissing them, telling them that attempting to communicate with them is too much work and that they are not worth the effort. Remember: sometimes communication will take patience!

Pro-Tactile ASL

PTASL is a form of ASL that a person uses when they are both deaf and blind; they touch hands to read the signing.

Each country has its own signed language.

Many can’t understand each other! American signers can often understand French signers because the founder of ASL is from France. However, American signers cannot understand British signers, even though the spoken languages are nearly identical!

Deaf School

Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was a Yale graduate that helped establish the first formal school for the deaf in the U.S., the American School for the Deaf. This school still exists today in Hartford, Connecticut.

Deaf people can actually drive.

This may sound unsafe, but they have excellent peripheral vision - perhaps better than hearing people’s - and use visual cues to know when to do certain activities, such as stopping. Studies also suggest that deaf drivers are not any more likely to get into car crashes than hearing drivers.

Deaf Performing Arts

The Deaf Community has its own culture, including plays. A deaf theatre group, Sunshine 2.0, used traveled around the country to provide entertainment for the deaf community. It is now based in New York.

Quote

"As long as we have deaf people on Earth, we will have signs, and as long as we have our films, we can preserve our beautiful sign language in its original purity. It is our hope that we all will love and guard our beautiful sign language as the noblest gift God has given to deaf people."

George W. Veditz, President of National

Association of the Deaf and sign language filmmaker (spoken in sign language!)

Famous and Deaf

There are many famous individuals who were or are deaf or hard of hearing that you may not have realized. Thomas Edison, Stephen Colbert, Millie Bobbie Brown, Bill Clinton, and Whoopi Goldberg are just some of them.

Origins of Hearing Loss

2 out of 3 of every 1,000 children having some hearing loss and over 90% of them are born to hearing parents. It’s not necessarily heritable. Some genes can cause it, and they may be passed down, but it largely stems from mutations.

Signing Tip

To get the attention of those in the deaf community, simply tap on their shoulder. It’s considered rude to wave one’s hand in front of a deaf person’s face. And NEVER, EVER grab a deaf person’s hands to force someone to stop signing and pay attention. This is the equivalent of putting one’s hand over a hearing person’s mouth.

Deaf Parties

At social gatherings, people in the deaf community make their way around  to say goodbye to everyone. This is a very long process, but it reinforces the interconnection values of the deaf culture.

Mythbuster

A common misconception about the deaf community is that they all read lips. This is not true! Lip reading is just something that helps with conversation when sign language is impossible, and not just for the deaf. What’s more, completely accurate lip reading is nearly impossible anyway.

Signing Tip

In the deaf culture, people look at each other's face, not their hands, when communicating. Facial expression is considered a major part of the communication process.

Deaf people enjoy and play music like hearing people.

They are able to feel the vibrations of sound and the beat of the music without hearing it. In fact, on America’s Got Talent in 2017, Mandy Harvey, a deaf singer, wowed the audience with her performance so much that Simon Cowell hit the golden buzzer for her!

Sign Language and Kids

Teaching young children (hearing or otherwise) to sign (even before they can speak) can help with cognitive development.
